The other name of ascorbic acid is vitamin c. This vitamin is very essential because like mammals and other animals, humans cannot create this vitamin naturally in their body. The vitamin c is very useful in the synthesis of the collagen. Collagen is a structural element of the tendons, blood vessels, bone and ligaments. The bodies can break without the presence of this vitamin. This disease is known as “scurvy”. During this time, it was recommended by the British navy to take lemons and oranges to improve the deficiency of vitamin c.

From various studies, it has been found that vitamin c is very helpful in preventing the common cold. There have been trials done regarding the prevention as well as treatment of the cold with this vitamin and it was found that the dose of vitamin c up to 2 grams per day did not give proper effect in the decrease of the cold. Moreover, it was also found in the further studies that the doses of vitamin c from 250 grams to 1 gram per day can decrease the effect of cold to 50%.

Thus, a conclusion can be drawn that vitamin c cannot help when the person is already suffering from cold but, instead it can help in preventing in future when you are in stressful or cold situations.
