If you plan to care for your elderly parent, or you are currently doing so, incontinence is one such issue which you will come across sooner or later. Incontinence is the inability to fully control urination. Elderly people, especially women, are at higher risk of suffering from one of the causes behind incontinence. Some of these reasons include urinary tract infections, weak pelvic muscles, diabetes, enlargement of men’s prostate gland, thinning of vagina wall in women, high calcium content in the body, and inability to move.
Generally, there are four types of incontinence: urge, stress, overflow and functional. The most commonly found form is urge incontinence where the individual is not given sufficient warning before they need to go. The pressure that the stomach muscles exert on the bladder when the person sneezes or laughs may cause stress incontinence. Overflow incontinence is major prevalent in men who have an enlarged prostate gland which tends to block the urinary tract such that the bladder teaches a point where it becomes too full. Functional incontinence occurs when a person is unable to get to the restroom on time but generally possesses good control of the bladder.
Elderly people tend to suffer from all the four as the muscles in and around the bladder and urethra tend to become weaker with age. Incontinence is a very unfortunate issue for most elderly people because it arises due to the breakdown of the human system. You must just learn to cope with the problem without putting your parent in an embarrassing situation. Don’t let her/him be too embarrassed to socialize and cut her/himself off from friends. Your parent will become lonely without companionship. Instead of allowing her/him to become a hermit, discuss with her/his doctor how to address the incontinence.
Together, you can consider different solutions that will ease her/his embarrassment and reinvigorate her/his social life. To help your parent manage the incontinence problem, always have adult diapers in stock. It has been vital for seniors living at home or elders having fun outside. Don’t forget to provide bathroom handrails for your parent. This item is very helpful. Keep in mind that giving optimal care to your elderly parent is the best way to say “Thank You” for all they’ve done for you over the years.
